Amid Pope Francis’ health crisis many have pondered what might happen if the Pope were to die or resign.

Sede Vacante is a Latin term meaning “the seat being vacant,” referring to the period when the papal office is unoccupied due to the death or resignation of a pope, before a new pope is elected.

During this time, the administration of the Holy See is overseen by the College of Cardinals, but no major decisions or changes can be made until a new pope is chosen through a conclave.

The Vatican issues a special coat of arms during Sede Vacante, featuring the papal tiara above crossed keys but without the papal insignia.

Mitchell Corps spoke with Fr. John Jegerow and Dr. Trevor Cullen about the Church’s response to the Pope’s health crisis, and the secretive processes of the conclave.
