‘Authors’ worst nightmare’

Authors are pushing back as major tech companies face legal action for using pirated books to train AI without permission.

Thousands of books have been taken from pirated sites to train AI models without permission, and in Melbourne, a publisher has asked more than 40 writers to sign over the rights to their own work for AI training.

Now, major tech companies like Meta and OpenAI are facing legal action over claims they’ve used stolen books to build their AI systems. 

With uncertainty growing, authors are banding together to fight back.
