‘I wouldn’t cope there’

New aged care reform commencing July 1 aims to keep elderly out of institutions and in their own homes for longer.

“I love my home. I love my garden.”

80-year-old Katica Martinovich is one of many elderly looking forward to receiving continued care in their own home when the new aged care reform commences in July this year.

Mrs Martinovich welcomes the reform, saying she has been worried she would have to go through the experiences her mum went through in aged care.

“[Aged care was] the departure, waiting for the plane to take her home,” she says.

“I wouldn’t cope there.”

The reform is the biggest overhaul of Australia’s aged care sector in decades, and follows a 2023 report from The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, which found more than 1,000 cases of neglect are being reported in Australian aged care facilities each month.
