Keller’s Farm Market: A taste of community

Freshly baked goods, farm produce and familiar faces are at the heart of Keller’s Farm Market, where the Keller family has turned a weekend market into a welcoming community gathering just outside Perth.

What started during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into a weekend ritual for the Keller family — and for customers who return for wood-fired bread, Swiss pastries and farm produce.

Keller’s Farm Market, about 30 minutes from Perth’s CBD, is open each Saturday and Sunday.

“Simple but heartfelt” is how the Keller family describes it.

“The people, the people love it and the food of course,” Marija Keller said.

When asked what she loves selling most, the answer comes quickly.

“Wood-fired bread, but now we do pastries as well and everything is made from scratch.”

First-time visitor Sinead Dyer said the welcoming environment was one of the things that stood out during her visit.

“I expected to just come in, grab a few things and leave, but everyone was so friendly and it had such a relaxed atmosphere,” Dyer said.

She said the market immediately felt different from a typical weekend grocery run.

“It feels really unique, farm fresh and you can see who is making the food and it being enjoyed by people.”

More than a market: the family behind the farm

Behind the stalls, Keller’s Farm is a family operation. Marija runs the market alongside her husband, Philipp, and their children.

Other relatives also regularly lend a hand, including Marija’s uncle and father.

The family-run side is part of the reason why regular customer like Chloe Thexeira is coming back.

“The baked goods and the way they run the market has such a family feel, I love it.”

Thexeira said the food kept her coming back, but the atmosphere was equally important.

“Everyone is welcoming and there’s something nice about seeing the same faces each weekend.”

For Dyer, just one visit was enough to leave a lasting impression.

“I can’t wait to come back, bring my kids and I’ve told my sister she has to bring hers.”
